![]() ![]() ![]() As Sony is the parent company, they most likely take a larger share of the revenue. Naughty Dog and Sony split the revenue up between them. This is the most likely option as to how Naughty Dog and Sony Interactive’s relationship works. So 2 for the publisher, 1 for the developer. ![]() This is when a developer and a publisher split the revenue of a game between them with a ratio. This isn’t what subsidiaries/ parent company deals are like, but mostly between mutual third party game companiesįinally, we get to the royalty sharing clause contract. However, I don’t see this being the deal that subsidiaries and their parent companies make, as it would mean that the parent company reaps all the rewards of the game and none of the revenue goes to the developers which would cause a problem of how they’re payed back. This is most likely how the PS3 port of the Orange Box, (developed by EA and published by Valve) was made. ![]() These are contracts, where one company (the developer) is payed up front by another company (the publisher) and any revenue generated by the game goes solely to the publisher with none of it going to the developers. So next we get to work for hire contracts. They are self-publishing and this is something that Naughty Dog isn’t, as it’s a subsidiary And obviously, these companies also publish the games they develop. The most famous one being CD Projekt Red. These are companies that are usually, small in size, but there are many large companies that are indie companies. Indie companies, Work for hire contracts and a Royalty Sharing Clause Contract and we’ll see where Naughty Dog fits into that There’s usually 3 ways, that a developer/publisher relationship works. Now we need to establish how Sony and Naughty Dog’s working relationship is. Now, we’ll leave Marketing Budget out as that’s something else entirely. So for the sake of argument, I’ll say the lowest estimate of $125 Million. Using this we can establish that the production budget of The Last of Us: Part 2, was most likely in the ballpark of, between $125 Million and $150 Million, including the delay. But we can estimate that it cost about $50 million to make. The Last of Us took four years to make and was delayed slightly for polish. The Budget for both Uncharted 3 and The Last of Us isn’t known, however, if we keep the trend going, because Uncharted 3 took the same development time as the second one, it also most likely cost $20 million. The first 2 Uncharted games both cost $20 Million and Uncharted 4 cost $100 Million. Using history, we can make an educated guess. However, we can assume it was more than that. Some sources like Screen Rant putting the production budget around $100 million. In reality, Gamstat playerbase figures aren’t sales as they themselves have put it and this is because of the fact that Gamstat doesn’t take into account, resales and different accounts sharing the same games, meaning that the numbers used here for sales are most likely, much higher than what the actual sales numbers areįirst, we need to establish the budget of The Last of Us: Part 2. Fourth, I’m assuming that all copies of the game were sold at $60, so this doesn’t include collector’s editions (which I don’t know the sales figures of), resales and discounts and fifth and finally, I’m assuming that all Gamstat figures are the sales and not adjusting for an increase in the playerbase. Second is how the Naughty Dog and Sony relationship works. Taking 30% of the cut from the games on the store while the rest goes to the developers. More specifically, that the PlayStation Store works the same way as any other digital store. We aren’t going into the debate of “it was 4 million sold” vs “it was 4 million shipped” Anyway, the game still hasn’t made a profit for Naughty Dog. As I was corrected that the game has sold 6.4 million sales as Gamstat is usually deflated in the early months. This is based off of the latest figures on Gamstat. So, the Last of Us 2 has sold 6.4 million copies. ![]()
